Samsung HT-BD2S
I haven’t presented a cool home theatre system for quite some time now. Surprisingly, this one doesn’t come from Sony. The Japanese may have spiffy Blu-ray players and surround setups, but Samsung strikes back with its latest compact BD home cinema system that is based on the HT-BD2T setup.
The HT-BD2S features smaller satellite speakers which make up for a more affordable price of $1,000. However, the new system still integrates the same central box, complete with its 7.1 channel and 1,100 W output, so you can hook up bigger speakers if you find the new ones too tiny for your tastes.
Samsung basically aims newcomers to Blu-ray with this system. The Koreans designed it to work best as a standalone setup rather than something that might integrate with other components. The HT-BD2S is sort of a simplified version of the “2T” system, as its inputs are limited to two optical digital ports, giving little room for expansion. Anyhow, the 2S lets you play Blu-rays, DVDs, CDs and MP3 CDs and some FM radio waves.
On the output side, we find the HDMI, component video, S-Video, composite video, 7.1 channel audio and an Ethernet connection for online radios. HD standards pose no problem to this system: you got 720p, 1080i and 1080p running smoothly, but this only applies to the older Profile 1.0 specification, which means many of the interactive or online features of the latest Blu-ray discs won’t work.
