Logitech is a big Swiss company that now is selling its products all over the world. It was founded in 1981, and it first produced mice for computers. But now it expanded its offer of products and its manufacturing many other types of computer accessories, such as: mice, keyboards, webcams, microphones, gaming accessories and also computer speakers. Since this site is specialized in speakers, today we are going to talk about some of the Logitech’s 5.1 speakers.

If you don’t already know, a 5.1 system is composed out of 6 speakers. There are 5 regular speakers plus a subwoofer (so from here comes the name 5.1) . The 5 speakers are also divided into 2 types: the center channel and the satellite speakers. The center channel is the big speaker that stays in a horizontally position, in front of the user. This is an important part of the system and it usually gives the high sounds, such as voices in a movie or a song. The satellite speakers are the 4 small speakers that are spread through all the room. Each one of them has a specific location that has to be respected. For example the left rear speaker must be placed exactly in the left side, behind the user and it’s the same with all the other satellites (right rear, left front and right front). These 4 speakers are also very important in a surround system, because they will give you the actual surround feelings. And the final component of the system, the subwoofer is also an important one, and it will complete the range of sounds by giving the low and deep frequencies (the bass). So with all of these 6 components you will get a great audio experience from your 5.1 sound system.

Today we are going to discuss about the most expensive 5.1 system from Logitech, the Z-5500 Digital 5.1 Speaker System.

It comes at a price of about 400 dollars, but for these money it will give you a great sound. One of its many features is the onboard 5.1 digital encoding, meaning that you will hear all the details of your Dolby digital, DTS and AAC soundtracks. The speakers also have the THX seal of approval, meaning that they met strict performance standards and you can be sure they sound good. The satellite speakers and the center channel all have aluminum drivers, that will both give you clear high end and rich mid range sound, and also look good. They are looking nice both with the grill on or taken off. The satellite speakers are also wall-mountable. Just rotate the stands of a speaker to switch from desktop to wall.

The system also features both digital and analog inputs, and you can connect up to six components at the same time. So you can just plug your devices in and leave them there. Most of the cheap 5.1 systems are having all the controls on the back of the subwoofer. But this is not the case for this system. Not only that it offers a wireless remote control, it will also give you a Sound Touch control panel. So you can place the control panel on the desk right next to you, and use it when you are sitting on the chair and use the remote control when you are watching a movie from your bed or your armchair. From both of the devices you can turn the system on or off, change all the volume levels or set the inputs.

But this is not all, and the good part just begins now. You will be surprised to find out that the system has a great total power of 505 watts RMS. Yeah that’s true…five hundred watts! Even a system with 150 watts is enough to annoy your neighbors at high volumes, so just imagine what you can do with a 500 watts system. It’s not even recommended to use it in a small room, because probably you won’t be able to sit next to it at high volumes. That’s why you can use it in a larger room, or even in a pub, restaurant or something like this. The power is divided into 188 watts for the subwoofer, 62 watts for each satellite speakers and 69 watts for the center channel. So it means you will have plenty of power in each of the speakers, but the biggest amount of power is concentrated in the front part, right next to the listener. You will have the center channel in your front, the subwoofer under your feet and two satellite speakers in each of the sides, so imagine what a great audio experience you can enjoy! The frequency response for this system is very good, from 33 hz to 20.000 hz, meaning that you will have both a deep bass and some clear high sounds.

Other technical specifications for the system are: Total Peak power: 1010 watts, Maximum SPL: >115 dB, Signal to noise ratio: >93.5 dB, typical 100, nput impedance: 8,000 ohms. The system is compatible to many devices such as: computers, CD, DVD and Mp3 players and also to gaming consoles such as Play Station or X-box.

As we already mentioned the satellite speakers are having some 3 inch aluminium phase plug drivers and the subwoofer has a 10 inch high excursion ported driver with sixth order bass reflex enclosure. The system is compatible also with digital connections. So if you have this system you should definitely use the digital (optical or coaxial) connections, because they will improve the sound even more.

The ratings for this system are very good, quite perfect. Most of the users or professional sites are giving the perfect score: 5 out of 5 stars. The reviews are also very good, and the users are more than satisfied with the system. A user is saying that this is the best 5.1 system he ever had, and it gives a crystal clear sound.

So if you have some money to spend, and you are looking for a good and powerful surround sound system, then you should definitely choose the Z – 5500 Digital 5.1 Speaker System from Logitech. Enjoy!
