The world of computers has continually developed, and the technologies got better and better. It was possible for the whole computer to become better thanks to the evolution of each single component. Anyway, just the 2 speakers will stand on your desk, and the subwoofer will be placed under your desk, so it won’t take such a lot of space. But if you have special mounting places in the wall, you can buy some in-wall or in-ceiling speakers. They will be placed in the special places from the wall or ceiling, and they practically won’t take any space in your room. And they will also offer you a nice sound, that will come from above you or from the sides.



Now let’s get back to the speakers that stay on your desk…or at least on the floor. If space is not such a big issue and it’s ok for you to have 6 speakers and a few more wires in the room, then you can choose to buy a 5.1 audio system. As we said it has 6 components, and these are: a center channel, a subwoofer and 4 satellite speakers. They all will be placed around the room this way: the center channel in front of you, the subwoofer under the desk, and a satellite speaker in each corner of the room. Thanks to this placement you will be able to enjoy some great surround feelings, such as the feeling of someone being behind you when watching a movie or playing a video game. And thanks to all of the components a 5.1 system will offer you a great sound that is rich and contains all the sound frequencies.

It is composed out of 4 satellite speakers, a subwoofer and also a center channel. All of these speakers combined will bring a great and complex sound, through all of the sound ranges and it will also offer you great surround feelings. There are also the 7.1 sound system which have 2 extra satellites, but they are not so popular, and a 5.1 system is quite enough for your room. But a 5.1 system has 6 components, that need to be placed all over the room, and that will have a lot of wires.

So in case you don’t want speakers all over your room, but you will still want a powerful sound, then you must choose some floorstanding speakers. These are really big and heavy, but they also offer a great, complex and powerful sound. They have all sort of drivers included (some for high frequency sounds, others for mid range and others for the bass) so the sound will be full, just like on a 5.1 system. But in this case you will have just 2 speakers instead of 6, so you won’t need to worry about cables anymore.

So these were some options that you can choose for your computer, and today we are going to discuss about how to switch between 2 stereo and 5.1 speakers. It is not that difficult so you should be able to handle this alone. The only thing you need to worry about after buying the 5.1 system, is to check if you have an appropriate sound card. If you have a new computer, it probably already has a 5.1 sound card, that is integrated on the main board. But you don’t have one, you might need to buy one.

Don’t worry because it is not that expensive. Of course you can connect the system to your regular sound card, but the sound quality won’t be so good. The next step is to arrange all of the speakers around the room. Place the satellites speakers in each corner of the room, and be sure to place them correctly. For example the front left speaker must be in your front left side, the rear right speaker must be behind you in your right side and so on. Then place the center channel in front of you on the desk, and the subwoofer in a corner under the desk. This is the recommended placement for a 5.1 system and it will offer you the best sound quality. So after placing all the speakers in their place, take all of their wires and get them to the subwoofer. You will have to insert each speaker in the subwoofer, in its specific place (that is usually written on the back of the subwoofer).

After that there is one more step to do…to connect the subwoofer to the computer. The subwoofer will have a wire with 3 connectors (that are colored different, usually pink, green and black). Just connect these 3 connectors into the computer, on the sound card, into the jacks that have the same color. Now the system should work, but in some cases you will need to change some settings on the audio driver software or in the “volume control” from the Windows. As you can notice in the image the system is composed out of many speakers. Each of these speakers has its own name and characteristics. Let’s begin with the biggest speaker from the image, which is the subwoofer. As you may already know, the subwoofer is specially made to give the low and deep frequencies, in another words: the bass. The subwoofer will really make a difference between a 5.1 system and some regular stereo speakers, and it will bring a new dimension to your music. If the subwoofer is powerful enough, and it is played at high volumes, it can give you some great sensations and can bring the night club (or a live concert) into your own room. Usually the recommended position for the subwoofer is under the desk. The speaker sitting on the subwoofer (in the image), the one that stays horizontally is the center channel. This component usually gives the high sounds, such as voices of actors and singers and that’s why it is also an important part of a 5.1 surround sound system. The recommended position for the center channel, is in front of the user, pretty close to him. We all know that the 5.1 systems are famous for their surround sound. But you can’t have a surround sound only with a subwoofer and a center channel. For these kind of sound you will need some satellite speakers. A 5.1 system (and also the Logitech X 540 system) has 4 satellite speakers. You can also see them in the image, they are the 4 speakers that are sitting vertically. Usually the satellite speakers have to be placed in certain places, and you will learn about this from the user manual. But if you don’t have one, just think about it because it is simple: each of the satellite speakers has a name : rear left, rear right, front left and front right. So this is exactly how you have to position them. If the arrangement is correct, then you will be able to enjoy some great surround feelings, such as the sensation of someone attacking you from behind.

Now let’s get back to our system, the Logitech X 540. This system is not expensive at all, compared to other surround sound systems that can cost hundreds of dollars. The price for this one is slightly under 100 dollars (99 dollars). So you will not spend a fortune, and you will still be able to enjoy a rich, clear and balanced sound. The sound will be spread through all the room, so you won’t have to worry about dead zones or hot spots like in other surround systems. This feature is available thanks to the position of the drivers, which are both forward and backward firing drivers. All the clear and rich sound from the center channel and satellites will be completed by the deep bass (without too much distortion) offered by the subwoofer.

The design is quite simple and elegant, so they will easily assort with your room. The speakers are also quite small, meaning that they will easily fit even in a small and crowded room. The satellite speakers can be mounted on walls, while de center channel can be placed directly onto most flat-panel displays. Along with the six speakers you will also receive a wireless control pod. This small and wireless device is very useful. Most of the surround sound systems have the controls mounted on the subwoofer. And like we said the subwoofer has to stay under the desk, so this means you will always have to crawl under the desk to change the volume. But this is not the case with the Logitech x 540, because you can place the control pod right next to your hand, and be able to control all the volume levels. From the control pod you can also turn the system on and off.

For those times when you want to enjoy some music all by yourself you can use some headphones and they can be connected into the wireless control pod. You can connect this system to a computer and also to a MP3 or CD player. The dimensions for the subwoofer are: 11.25 inches H, 6.5 inches W and 9.75 inches D while a satellite speaker has 8.4 inches in height, 3.2 inches in width and 5 inches in depth. The centre channel has dimensions of 7.8 inches H, 4.74 inches W and 3.75 inches D.



The Logitech x 540 system has a total power of 70 watts RMS which is quite good, considering the small price. This can be enough for a small room, and just with 70 watts, turned at maximum, you can still annoy your neighbours. The power is divided into 45 watts for the satellite speakers and centre channel  and 25 watts for the subwoofer. The frequency response is between 40 and 20.000 hertz. This will mean that the system will give all the sound ranges, from a deep bass to some clear high sounds.

The ratings and reviews for this system are quite really good, and most of the sites and users are giving the perfect score (5 out of 5). Reading the reviews of some of the home users, you will find that they were really pleased with the product.   A person tested it both by playing some loud music, or by playing a video game, and the results were very good.

Today JBL is a unit of Harman International Industries and it is one of the biggest producers of audio devices in the world. It was founded many years ago, in the 1940’s by James Bullough Lansing (JBL). The company evolved a lot since that time, changing owners and managers but always producing high quality speakers, for  home users, concerts and events and also for the automotive industry. So who knows…you might have enjoyed the great sound from JBL in a car, in someone’s apartment or at a concert or public event, without even knowing it.

There are many kinds of speakers in the JBL home audio speakers category, and today we are going to discus about some of them. Usually the home speakers from JBL are really powerful and can give anyone a great audio experience. These speakers are not affordable for everyone but they definitely give everyone something to aspire to. In the offer of home audio speakers from JBL you will find devices like: bookshelf speakers, center channels, floor speakers, in-wall / in ceiling speakers, outdoor speakers and subwoofers.

Like we mentioned before you can combine them with other  components and make a surround sound system, but you can just use them alone, and you will still have a great and complex sound.  The maximum recommended amplifier power is 125 watts, which is pretty good for some satellite speakers. Like we mentioned before the JBL speakers are not affordable to anyone, and the price for these speakers is somewhere around 200-350 dollars. So you will have to spend about 1.000 dollars or even more to make a surround sound system out of ES20 speakers (satellites, a center  channel and a subwoofer), but the sound quality that you will get will definitely worth the money.



Now let’s talk about some floor standing speakers from JBL. These type of speakers can vary from small and unobtrusive boxes to high tower speakers that will really attract your eyes. They can be made in different finishes such as cherry wood, black ash or white gloss, and they will easily blend in your room. They are usually heavy, so you can consider them as a part of the room’s furniture. Let’s take an example of floor standing speakers from JBL, and we’ll go for the CST 55. These are equipped with reinforced woofers and titanium laminate tweeters and they will bring a really professional sound to your music  or movies. You can use them as they come, covered in a black grill, which makes them look very simple but elegant. Or you can take off the grill, and let everyone admire their woofers and tweeters.

The CST 55 are tower speakers, with dimensions of 1168 mm H x 286 mm W x 286 mm D / 46 " x 11-1/4 " x 11-1/4 " and weight of 17 lbs (7 kg). They also have a wide range of frequency response, between 55 Hz and 30.000 Hz. So you can also combine them with other components and make a sound system, but you can definitely use them alone, and still have a great sound through all the sound ranges. The power for these floor standing speakers is actually smaller than the previous speakers (they have 50 watts RMS), so the price is also smaller – around 150 - 200 dollars.



A device that can not miss from any sound system is the subwoofer. This is the speaker that is specially designed to bring just the low and deep sound frequencies (in a single word – the bass). These are usually placed under the desk, and if they are powerful enough they can easily make your desk, your windows and your entire house to vibrate and shiver. A good subwoofer from JBL is the ES 250 P.

It is a really powerful subwoofer, with a power of 400 watts and an amplifier peak dynamic power of 700 watts. The frequency response goes from 150 Hz all the way down to just 25 Hz – this means the bass will be really deep, with sounds that you could not hear on a regular set of speakers. It has a nice black design with dimensions of   502 mm H x  400 mm W x 428 mm D / 19-3/4 " x 15-3/4 " x 16-7/8 " and a weight o f 19 kg (43 lbs). The price is as high as the quality is: somewhere around 500 - 600 dollars.
