But this is not all…these days you can also take the great sound of a movie from the cinema, right into your own room. And to do this you might need a home audio system (also known as “home theater system” or “home cinema system”). These devices are meant to bring the video and audio experience from a cinema to a private house. Usually a home audio system is composed out of many components, that combined will bring that great movie experience. Some systems come will all the required components, while others have just some of them…but you can even make your own system and combine elements from different producers.

For the video experience you will need 2 things: a TV and a movie player device. You can use a regular TV for your home cinema system, but it will be much better if you will use a HD (High Definition) TV set. If you have a room big enough, and you can afford it, you can even buy a video projector and a projection screen, and this will really look like a cinema right in your own home. But a HD TV will be enough, and you can enjoy a great quality of the image with it.

Of course you will need something to play the movie from. You can use a computer, but if you have the home cinema system in another room rather than the room with the computer, you can use a DVD player. Usually a home cinema system has an included device like this, that plays a lot of video and audio formats, such as CD, DVD, R 5, Blu Ray, MP3, WMA and others.

So now you have your big and flat screen just like the one at the cinema, but for the experience to be complete you will also need a powerful sound…just like the one from a cinema. And at this part the home cinema systems are quite good, and they usually have 6 or 8 speakers. The one with 6 speakers is a 5.1 system. This one is composed out of 4 satellite speakers, a center channel and a subwoofer. The satellite speakers will focus on the mid range sound, and because of the way they are placed in the room (a speaker in each corner), they will give you some great surround feelings.

So when watching a movie you can feel what the actor is feeling, for example that he is attacked from behind. The center channel will focus mostly on the high frequency sounds, such as the voices of the actors. The center channel will be placed in front of you (usually under the flat screen), so you will hear the voices very well. First of all you might check if the new computer has the appropriate sound card. Maybe you are using a surround sound audio system, and your old computer had a 5.1 sound card. But the new computer may have just a regular sound card, so that’s why your system might not work at all, or the sound quality may not be so good. In this case you can take the sound card from the old computer (if you had one), or buy a new one and place it on the new computer.

But placing a new sound card may not fix your “new computer and old speakers don’t work” problem. You must also install the appropriate drivers for the sound card or from the speaker. You may find them on a CD that came along with the sound card or with the speakers, or you can find them on the internet, by typing the exact model you have. After installing the drivers, open the software and see if all the volume levels are at maximum. Also check out if none of the channels is muted. If the “Mute” option is checked, please uncheck it.

Another problem may be if you didn’t plug the speakers into the appropriate jack. Maybe the new computer has a slightly different configuration, and you may placed the speakers in the wrong hole. These days you will find some advanced models of speakers, that are capable of delivering a very good sound. And they don’t even have to be big to accomplish this. Actually you can find a lot of speakers on the market that are quite really small, but they still give a good and clear sound. Today we are going to talk about some models of mini computer speakers. Usually the smallest models of speakers are also USB speakers. This means that they connect with the computer (or laptop) through the USB cable, and they have only one wire which is both for the audio signal and power. So this means there is no need to plug them in a socket, or to worry about batteries, because if your laptop is running, these speakers will work too. And this way you can use them anywhere you go…in a plane, in a train, at a picnic, on top of a mountain and so on. The first model we’ll choose is the Lenovo mini USB speakers M 220.

As you can see, they have a very small design, and they also look quite good. They are not expensive and you can buy them for about 20 dollars. Unfortunately we weren’t able to find any technical details for this model of speakers, so if you are already using them, please tell us more about them.

Let’s discuss about another model of mini computer speakers, for example the SRS A 201 speakers from Sony. They don’t have the classical “box shape” of most of the stereo speakers, and they look quite nice. Each of the 2 speakers has dimensions of 2.8 inches in width, 3.6 inches in depth and 5.6 inches in height and a weight of 7.2 oz. Each speaker has a power of 1 watt, meaning that the total power is 2 watts RMS. This is not much, but it can be quite enough for when you are traveling and you don’t want to disturb the others around you, or to use them in the hotel room, or when having a conference or a presentation.

The speakers are magnetically shielded so they won’t interfere when placed close to a TV or a monitor, and they sound pretty nice. The have a frequency response from 150 to 20.000 hertz. They won’t present such a good bass note, but what can you expect from such small speakers? The price for this model varies between 16 and 26 dollars, depending on where you buy them from. So that’s why before buying a product it is best to search for the best deal on the market. Good luck on finding the speakers you like the most!

The computers these days are capable of many operations and activities, and most of them also require some sound. And for this you must have some computer speakers. Along with the development of the computers, the speakers also evolved. Today there are so many types of computer speakers, with all sort of shapes, colors, sizes and specifications. There are also audio systems, and by the numbers of speakers they have, they can be: 2.0 systems, 2.1 systems, and surround sound systems (5.1 or 7.1). A 2.0 system is not quite a system…it is made out of 2 simple stereo speakers. A 2.1 system is composed out of 2 stereo speakers, but beside this it also has a subwoofer. The subwoofer will bring a deep and powerful bass, giving a new dimension to the sound, and completing the sound brought by the 2 speakers.

A surround sound system not only has all the sound ranges, but it is also capable of giving a surround sound. Some of the feelings that you can experience with such a system are the feeling of a bullet passing next to your head, or feeling like someone is attacking you from behind. As we said there are 2 types of surround sound systems: the 5.1 system which is composed out of a subwoofer, a center channel and 4 satellite speakers, and the 7.1 system that also has a subwoofer, a center channel but 6 satellites instead of 4.

But we are not going to discuss about a surround sound system today, and we are going to focus on some small stereo speakers. There are many big producers on the market, and some of them are: Altec Lansing, Harman Kardon , Creative, JBL, Logitech, Bose, Boston Acoustics and others. But today we are going to choose a producer that is not so big and famous, and this is Inland. This company is offering just a few models of speakers, and some of them are the Pro Sound 2.000 stereo speakers.

As you can see in the image these are some simple, black classical speakers with a simple but elegant shape. They are not quite rectangular like most of the cheap stereo speakers, and the top of the speakers is quite different. So between some classic cheap speakers that you see with most of the new computers and these ones, you will probably choose the Pro Sound 2000.

As we have already said these are cheap speakers and the prices are different depending on where you buy them from. We found these speakers with the lowest price of 6.99 dollars and with the highest price of 14 dollars. So that’s why it is best to always check for the best offer. First check out many retail sites on the internet, and also auction sites such as amazon.com or ebay.com. But if you don’t trust these sites, and you don’t want to buy the speakers from the internet then you can visit about 3 or 4 retail stores and see which one offers the best price. In this case, for the Pro Sound 2000 speakers you can save just 5 or 7 dollars, so it will probably not worth the effort, but when you are buying a product that costs hundreds of dollars, it is really indicated to search for the best deal, and you can save up to 100 dollars and who knows, even more. These speakers are compatible with all PC sound cards and also with portable music devices such as CD, DVD or MP3 players.

They are also magnetically shielded so you can place them close to the monitor, without interfering with it. On one of the speakers you will find the volume knob, and also the power on and off button. Here you will also find a headphones jack, which is very useful for those times when you want to enjoy some music on your own, without disturbing the others around you. Both speakers are covered with a cloth speaker grill.

There are not so many reviews about these speakers, and they also don’t have any ratings on most of the sites. Actually we have found just one rating on a site, and this is of just 1 star out of 5. So we don’t know exactly what to believe about these speakers. Maybe they sound really bad, and not many people have them, and the ones who have bought them are not pleased at all. But from what the producer is saying they sound really good.

We should consider that every producer tries to sell the manufactured product, so he says only good things  about it. The producer is even trying to attract the buyers by telling them that these speakers have a great power of 100 watts PMPO. But don’t get fooled by this number, because this is not actually the real power. The real (RMS) power for the Pro Sound 2000 stereo speakers is 3.6 watts. So this means 1.8 watts for each speaker. This is definitely not much, but it’s not so small after all considering that most of the speakers at this price have just 1 watt RMS per speaker (so a total power of 2 watts RMS).

Each speaker has a 3.5 inch full range woofer, so the frequency response is quite a good one, from 70 hz to 20.000 Hz. They have an input sensitivity of 600 mv and feature high impact ABS enclosures. They also have a 6 inch speaker to speaker wire and a 6 inch speaker to audio source wire (that is 3.5 mm).

So after all these are some classical, cheap stereo speakers. They are not really special to stand out in a competition, but they are not bad either. If you already have a set of stereo speakers at your computer, we think it doesn’t worth to spend money on others that sound pretty much the same. But if your speakers are broken, or you have bought a computer without speakers, and you are looking for something simple, for the day to day music, then you can definitely choose the Pro Sound 2000 stereo speakers.

And today we are going to discuss about the hypersonic stereo speakers. The inventor of these unique speakers is Woody Norris, and here you can see him in the image, holding his invention -  the hypersonic sound speaker. In this article we are going to refer at the HyperSonic Sound as HSS. So practically the HSS is for the sound what the laser is for the light. With this technology the sound will be intensely focused and channeled so it can travel for a great distance, without dispersing.

In the demo video for this technology a technician points the sound from a small speaker to a person standing 100 yards away…and there is also a lot of noise from the nearby freeway. The technician plays a sound of ice cubes clinking into a glass, and the listener hears the sound just like it came through headphones. The sound is not at all like the one from a speaker that is placed far away, and it is covered by the background noise of the traffic. If the listener takes just a few steps to the side, out of the sound beam, he won’t hear anything. But if he steps back in the sound beam, the sound will be there. So it is just like a laser beam, and just like you can see it in the image below.

Dionyssis Angelopoulos from Athens, Greece went to San Diego to test this technology, and he came back so amazed by it so he got back to Greece and began to integrate the HSS technology into commercial sound systems. He is certain that in time, this kind of speakers will be used everywhere. But the technology still needs a few years until it becomes mainstream. This technology can be used in the future for the laptops, so that the sound will go only at the person standing in front of the laptop, and all the other people around won’t hear a thing.

It will be just like that person is using headphones, only that he won’t wear any headphones. The HSS technology can also be applied in cars, so that the parents sitting in the front will listen to one kind of music, and the kids that are sitting in the back will listen to another type of music. And they won’t hear a thing from the other’s music. Or we can use this technology in stores, concerts, televisions, museums, airports and so on. Some of the companies that were interested in this technology are : Wal-mart, Fox television, McDonald’s, Procter and Gamble, the Cirque de Soleil and others.

Just imagine sending instructions from the ground to a trapeze artist, without the crowd to hear it, or being at an airport, and hearing only the flight’s information that really concerns you. In 2002 the HSS technology was awarded with the grand prize for inventions by the Popular Science magazine. The Sony executive Simon Beesley says that this technology is offering huge benefits over the standard speakers, and he is sure that in time it will become more and more popular. The technology used for the classic speakers is the same for almost 80 years, and this will bring some “fresh air” to the audio industry. The impact can be just like that of the jet engine over the propeller planes, or just like the impact of personal computers and laptops over mainframes.

This idea has been in the minds of engineers for a long time, but it was considered to costly and unwieldy to become a product, so many abandoned it. But the first to make it practical was the ATC (American Technology Corp.) and especially by Woody Norris. He didn’t even went to an electronic college, and he just learned the electronics “by ear”, just like many people can play the piano even if they didn’t studied it. The HSS technology is not the only invention made by this man, and he invented many other interesting things during his career (in the audio and electronics domain of course).

When the waves reach a solid object or a person, they slow down, distort and crash together, resulting in the sound that you will hear. So just like a laser beam, you can use the sound beam from an HSS speaker to aim the sound on a specific object, and make him reflect from that object. In a demo room at American Technology Corp., someone is pointing the sound at a wall, and the listener hears the sound just like it is coming from that wall, and not from the speaker. So this way you can point the speaker on an object, let’s say on a door, and you will hear the sound just like it is coming from that door.

The ultrasonic waves from a hypersonic stereo speaker won’t dissipate, and they will travel pretty much straight ahead. So the sound can travel for even 150 yards, without distortion or loss of volume, while no one else in the surrounding area won’t hear it. The classic speakers work totally different, and their sound waves quickly disperse in the air, they will get weaker as you get far away from them.  Some other application for this  technology can be used at producing the megaphone. Just imagine a lifeguard using a megaphone of this type, and pointing it exactly on the person that needs help.

This way he can give instructions to that person, without the other people on the beach hearing anything. This technology can even be used for bad things…for example  if someone in the crowd will use a megaphone of this type, and point it to a player on the field saying bad things to him, he will easily get distracted from the game. Norris used his speaker to have some fun, and he spooked the neighborhood kids on Halloween. So, after all this is a very  cool technology, that can be used in so many domains and help people a lot, and we just home that someday the HyperSonic speakers will be more popular and famous all over the world.

So today we are going to take some random examples, and discuss more about them. There are many producers on the audio market, and each one is offering a wide variety of speakers, in different sizes and shapes, so you will have where to choose from. Here are just some of the big names on the market: JBL, Creative, Harman Kardon, Logitech, Boston Acoustics, Altec Lansing, Genius or Bose.

So you won’t need any batteries or power source for these speakers. So they are small, lightweight, and they also connect through the USB port, so they are just perfect speakers to be carried with you when you are traveling. They have built-in controls allowing you to have total control over the power and volume, right at your fingertips. Each speaker has a 2 inch (50 mm) full range driver. The sound pressure level is 80 db, and the frequency response for these speakers is from 180 hz to 20.000 hz. So they don’t have such a good bass response, but what can you expect from such small speakers? The signal to noise ratio @ 1 khz input is > 85 db. Each speaker has dimensions of 2.8 inch W x 4.8 inch D x 3.7 inch H ( 70 mm W x 121 mm D x 94 mm H). They have quite an unusual design, just like you can see in the image below:

Some other good stereo speakers, that are not so big either are the Bose Companion 2 series. Even though they have quite a high price ($US 100 ), they also sound really good and can be compared even with a 2.1 system. A 2.1 system is composed out of two stereo speakers and a subwoofer…and the reason why the Bose Companion 2 speakers can be compared with a system that has a subwoofer is that these speakers will bring quite a good bass. Of course not as good as the one given by a subwoofer, but still it will be much better than some classic stereo speakers.

So if you want to have a nice bass with your music, and you don’t want to fill up the space under your desk with a subwoofer, then you can buy these speakers. they have dimensions of 3.1 inch x 5.9 inch x 7.5 inch and each speaker weighs 2 lbs. They are not as small as the previous model, but they are not big either. They are not USB speakers, but you can still carry them with you, and use them somewhere where you find a power source. One of the two speakers has the volume control knob, and also a headphones jack (in case you want to listen to some music on your own, without disturbing the others around you).

Remember the speakers we have discussed about earlier that have a frequency response starting from 180 hz? And those ones didn’t have such a good bass…but imagine how these will sound compared to those, if the frequency response for these speakers starts at 80 hz!  So the bass will sound much better, and we have to admit that these speakers are also looking much better. So if you are in search for some small, ‘cool’ looking, with a good bass and a good overall sound, then you can definitely choose the Labtec  Spin 55 speakers.

So here were just some models of small stereo speakers. But of course you will find many more others on the market, and each time it is the best to search for the best deal. First search for the best type and model of speakers that will suit your audio preferences, and then after you choose a model, search for the store that is offering those speakers at the lowest price. Some times you will find some speaker much cheaper on one site or store, compared to another. So that’s why it is better to make some research before buying a product. So today we are going to talk about some marine speakers, and we are going to focus on one specific aspect: the size. So we are going to present some 6 inch x 9 inch stereo speakers. Let’s begin with the first model, the Boss MR – 690 6 x 9 inch marine speakers. Of course there are two of them, making them stereo speakers. They come at a retail price  of 72 dollars, but if you search more you can find them even cheaper. For example we found them on one site for just 48 dollars. So that’s why it is always best to search for the best price before buying a product. They are quite powerful speakers, with a power handling peak of 350 watts. The magnet structure has 50 oz. and the impedance is 4 ohm. They have a frequency response of 60 hz – 20 khz, meaning that they will sound quite nice, with quite a good bass. They have one aluminum voice coil of 1 inch and one mylar dome tweeter of also 1 inch. The grilles that are covering the speakers are made of plastic, and the cone material is poly injection.

The next model we’ll discuss is the MB Quart NKF 692 6 x 9 inch coaxial boat speakers. They are not that powerful ( 60 watts of RMS power and 130 watts peak), but they are really expensive. The retail price is 350 dollars, but we found them on one site for just 90 dollars. But still they are more expensive than the previous model. We are not quite sure why, but we are guessing the big price comes from the great sound quality offered by these speakers. They have a 1″ Titanium coated tweeter and an impedance of 4 ohm. They are made of special materials so they can resist for a long time on sea. They can resist against corrosion and against direct water spray. So enjoy them, and have a great party on your boat!

Some other marine speakers with dimension of 6 inch x 9 inch are the Bazooka MAC 6903 3-way coaxial speakers. These will cost you around 150 dollars and they are both looking and sounding great. These ones have both aluminum dome tweeters and also  poly-mica aquamarine woofer cones, making the sound even more complex. So the frequency response for this model is 40 hz – 20 khz. They total power handling is 150 watts, and the impedance is 4 ohms. These are also water and corrosion resistant, so there won’t be a problem if some sea water touches them.

Some other model with these dimensions is the Power Acoustik PSM 692 6 x 9 inch 2 way speakers. the price for this model is cheaper, around 47 dollars. But the power is quite really good, with 120 watts RMS. Of course these are also water resistant ant they are made of high quality black polypropylene cone and butyl rubber surround. They have plastic grills, but they are quite strength and the grills are also detachable. They feature a 1.25 inch high temperature voice coil and a ½ inch polypropylene tweeter. They also have a very good frequency response, from 50 hz to 20 khz. So this model might be the best deal, being powerful and cheap at the same time.

So here were some 6 inch x 9 inch stereo speakers, but of course there are many more others. So if you have a boat, and you wish to buy some good speakers with these dimensions, you will have many models to choose from. Good luck!
