Onkyo GKW-2.1HD

I’ve been stuck with PC 2.1 speakers for 10 years now. I really want to make the jump for a 5.1 or 7.1 system, but I don’t know where I am to place such a system for best acoustic results as my room is not that big. However, speaker manufacturers still make 2.1 speakers that try to emulate 5.1 systems. I haven’t yet tested such tricky setups and I tend to think they don’t really rise to an audiophile’s expectations. Take for example one of the latest systems in this category coming from Onkyo.
Onkyo’s new home entertainment system that looks to be specifically designed for people who think extra wires might not be a good idea for their house, while wireless speakers cost a fortune. The new system is dubbed GKW-2.1HD and consists of two 30W front stereo speakers, a 60W subwoofer plus a spiffy control unit and a remote for comfy use. It comes with standard support for 2.1HD audio, but Onkyo also made it possible for you to later add a few extra speakers in case you really need a 5.1-channel surround sound setup.
The main connectors are based on the HDMI 1.3 standard, with two inputs and a single output. There are also connections for adding in the extra surround speakers. The GKW-2.1HD also supports audio formats such as Dolby NR TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, taking full advantage of the integrated 24-bit/192kHz DACs.
The GKW-2.1HD is expect it to hit worldwide stores on June 21st for around $509.

Onkyo HT-S5100
Published by Bogdan Alex, on April 21st, 2008, in the categories: Onkyo
Today, I set my eyes on some cool new products from Onkyo. The Japanese hi-fi gear manufacturer has recently launched three versions for an elegant home theater system, each including a flexible HDTV-capable audio-video receiver, along with five or seven surround-sound loudspeakers accompanied by a powerful subwoofer.
I decided to present the most powerful version - the 7.1 channel HT-S5100 system. This one includes the sophisticated HT-R560 receiver which has three 1080p compatible HDMI inputs and one output. The HDMI Pass-Thru capability provides optimal video quality with enough bandwidth remaining for the audio channels. The receiver certainly impresses with the inclusion of the Audyssey 2EQ room correction technology which automatically adjusts the sound character and time delay of each speaker relative to the listening positions. Audyssey also comes standard with a Dynamic EQ preset in order to adjust sound on the fly to optimize sound quality for any volume, particularly at low listening levels.
As far as the loudspeaker system itself is concerned, the HT-S5100 is compatible with Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound processing technologies. Each channel offers a total output power of 130-watts using Onkyo's Wide Range Amplifier Technology (WRAT), while the provided subwoofer outputs up to 290-watt worth of deep bass.
The HT-S5100 system even integrates a dedicated iPod dock and charging station, as well as the new Music Optimizer technology to enhance the dynamic range of MP3 and AAC files which are normally compressed for headphone playback. You can also choose among black or silver finishes.
Onkyo HT-S5100 is already available and you can find it online for about $579.
